The Fourth Hermetic Principle: Polarity and the Art of Mental Transmutation

This article introduces the Fourth Hermetic Principle, Polarity, through the perspective of The Kybalion, exploring how certain opposites may represent different degrees within the same spectrum. By connecting the principle with Mental Transmutation, Giordano Bruno, Nicholas of Cusa, and practical examples such as fear and courage, the study shows how personal transformation can be understood as gradual movement rather than an immediate leap from one extreme to another. It also explains why Polarity should not be confused with forced positivity and prepares the reader for the next Hermetic Principle: Rhythm.

Long before The Kybalion was published, philosophers were already asking whether some of the oppositions we perceive as absolute might belong to a larger relationship.

During the Renaissance, thinkers such as Nicholas of Cusa and Giordano Bruno explored ideas involving unity, opposition, infinity, and what Cusa called the coincidentia oppositorum, or coincidence of opposites. Their philosophies were not the same as the system later presented in The Kybalion, but they reveal how deeply the question of opposites has occupied philosophical thought.

Centuries later, The Kybalion would approach this question through its Fourth Hermetic Principle: Polarity.

What Does Polarity Mean?

One of the central statements associated with this principle says:

“Everything is Dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites.”

The text then adds that:

“Opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree.”

At first, this can sound as though the principle simply means that everything has an opposite. But the idea is more specific.

Certain opposites may be understood as different degrees within the same general quality.

Temperature offers a simple example. We speak of heat and cold as though they were completely separate realities, but between them exists an entire range of degrees. The exact point at which “cold” becomes “warm” is not always absolute.

The Kybalion applies similar reasoning to other pairs and suggests that, in certain cases, what appears to be a rigid opposition may actually contain a continuum between two poles.

This distinction becomes especially interesting when we begin thinking about our own internal states.

From One Pole Toward Another

Consider fear and courage.

We often imagine transformation in absolute terms. Someone who feels afraid may believe that the only alternative is to suddenly become completely confident.

But what if transformation does not always require such a dramatic leap?

Perhaps the more useful question is not:

“How do I stop being afraid?”

but:

“What would moving slightly toward courage look like right now?”

A person who fears public speaking may not immediately become comfortable speaking in front of one hundred people. But they may be able to rehearse alone, record themselves, speak in front of one trusted person, and gradually face larger situations.

The fear may still be present, yet movement has already occurred.

This is one way of approaching what The Kybalion calls Mental Transmutation: the possibility of changing certain mental states by altering our position within a related range of experience.

The important point is not to pretend that we have instantly reached the opposite pole.

It is to recognize that a direction may exist between where we are and where we want to move.

Polarity Does Not Mean Forced Positivity

This idea also requires an important caution.

The Principle of Polarity should not become an excuse to deny difficult emotions or force every experience into a positive interpretation.

There are real losses, fears, frustrations, illnesses, conflicts, and painful experiences. Not everything needs to be transformed into a blessing, and not every uncomfortable emotion needs to disappear immediately.

Sometimes the most appropriate movement is action. At other times, it may be rest, acceptance, asking for help, establishing a boundary, or simply allowing ourselves time to process what has happened.

In this sense, Polarity can be understood less as an obligation to “be positive” and more as a way of asking:

“Given where I am right now, in which direction can I still move?”

That small change in perspective can be surprisingly powerful.

“All Truths Are but Half-Truths”

The Principle of Polarity also includes one of the most provocative statements in The Kybalion:

“All truths are but half-truths.”

This does not mean that facts do not exist or that every contradictory opinion is equally correct.

Instead, within the context of the principle, it invites us to consider whether some experiences may contain more than one dimension at the same time.

A professional failure can be genuinely painful while also producing knowledge that becomes useful later. We can love someone and still feel hurt by them. We can close an important chapter of life while remaining grateful for what it once gave us.

Human experience is not always divided neatly into absolute categories.

Polarity invites us to observe these tensions without immediately assuming that one side must completely erase the other.

Polarity as a Direction

Perhaps one of the most practical lessons we can take from this principle is that transformation does not always begin by reaching the opposite extreme.

It may begin by recognizing where we currently stand and choosing the next possible movement.

Instead of asking how to move from 0 to 10 immediately, we might ask:

“What would moving from 3 to 4 look like today?”

That shift may be small, but it creates something important: direction.

And once direction appears, transformation becomes less abstract.

This is where the Principle of Polarity becomes much deeper than the simple idea that “everything has an opposite.” It begins to touch questions involving identity, emotional states, perception, Mental Transmutation, and the way we respond to apparently contradictory experiences.

In our full Patreon study, we explore these ideas in much greater depth. We examine the relationship between Polarity and Mental Transmutation, the philosophical connection with Giordano Bruno and Nicholas of Cusa, the meaning of the statement “all truths are but half-truths,” and why Polarity should not be confused with forced positivity.

The complete study also includes a practical Scale of Polarity exercise designed to help you identify your current position, choose a direction, and translate that movement into a concrete action.

And this principle naturally leads us toward the next one.

If Polarity teaches us that certain states may contain different degrees, another question soon appears: why do we so often move back and forth between them?

Why do confidence and doubt, motivation and discouragement, expansion and contraction seem to alternate?

That question brings us to the Fifth Hermetic Principle: Rhythm.

Polarity helps us recognize the degrees between certain extremes. Rhythm invites us to understand why we continue moving between them.
